Fillings are commonly used to repair small areas of tooth decay or minor dental fractures. The materials they are made from will not be susceptible to the bacterial influence of tooth decay. However, as time goes on, the natural bacteria living in your mouth might be able to exploit the previously healthy tooth enamel surrounding an old filling.

When this happens, you might notice discomfort in the tooth, heightened sensitivity, or a graying in the tooth enamel around the filling. If this should be the case, you should not delay in seeking treatment at Witty Family and Cosmetic Dentistry in Nicholasville, Kentucky.

Sometimes a small filling in distress can be treated by extracting it and removing a small amount of the surrounding tooth enamel. Dr. Casey Witty can then apply a new filling. If the old filling was large, or a new area of tooth decay has formed, Dr. Casey Witty might recommend a total crown restoration.

First, our dentist will examine the tooth and take X-rays to assess the overall health of the tooth. Dr. Casey Witty will then remove the entire tooth enamel layer and the old filling. This will leave a small post-shaped structure known as an abutment that will eventually anchor a crown in your mouth.

A detailed impression is made of the abutment and any other related teeth in the area This will be sent to our dental lab where your final crown is made. Next, a hard plastic, temporary crown will be cemented over the abutment to protect it.

You will need to come in for a second appointment when your new crown is ready. This will be brief as the temporary crown is removed and Dr. Casey Witty cements your crown onto the abutment.
